What is FeO? Iron (II) Oxide of course! That's right, a whole new meaning to letters. On February 20, 2002, students in the grade 8 generation took part in a nomenclature competition in the game show like environment of the Guillermo Zambrano auditorium. Nomenclature is the term given to the naming of chemical compounds. After a week of preparation, eight students from Mr. McDonald's four grade 8 Science classes challenged each other in front of their peers to see who was the fastest at nomenclature.

The winning student was Adrian Viesca who provided a pizza party for his period 2 Science Class. 2nd place was Jose Ochoa, who was tremendously quick, but accuracy caught up with him in the final round against Adrian. Thanks to Morag Asquith, Barbara Belden, Liliana Burnes, Alejandra Cantu, Carolyn Clark, Sydney Conzemius, Claudia Del Cos, Sandy Files, Val Nathanson, and Dave Scott for being judges in the individual class competitions. Besides Adrian and Jose, the representatives from each class were: Period 1: Jorge De Leon and Camila Garcia Period 2: Barbara Garza Period 4: Costantino Benavides Period 6: David Benavides and Patricia Rodriguez Special thanks to Oswaldo Mandujano and the technical crew for creating an exciting environment for the competition. From music to game-show buzzers, the students really appreciated it. We look forward to next year's competition where all grade 8 classes will participate!
