ENLACE Results

Graphs

The graphs above represent a picture of the third, fourth and fifth grade's performance in the April ENLACE examinations in mathematics and Spanish when compared with the other private elementary schools in Mexico. The gold bar represents the performance of the top school and the black represents that of the bottom school. The identity of these schools is not known to us.

As with all numerical data, the results require careful consideration before conclusions can be drawn. La Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) emphasise that these figures are designed to be used to allow schools to focus on potential areas of self-evaluation. We at ASFM will certainly be using the ENLACE results in the manner that is recommended by SEP: curriculum alignment and areas of opportunity regarding necessary improvement. One cannot use the data to accurately assess comparative performances as the sample is so varied: 540 students from ASFM's elementary school took the ENLACE exams; some schools had as few as eleven pupils doing the same.

In reading these graphs and drawing conclusions from them it is necessary to take into account the fact that ENLACE is a mandatory curricular-based exam. ASFM students follow a different curriculum, and moreover study mathematics in English but were tested in Spanish.

Some results - and even some (incomplete) analysis of the results have already appeared in the Press. However, even this limited analysis is rendered inaccurate by the fact that the official SEP data includes sixth grade results as elementary results. At ASFM, of course, the sixth grade is part of the middle school. The graphs above show the true 3, 4 and 5 picture.

For your information, the raw data reads:

3rd grade scored in the top 14.9 percentage for maths and the top 26 percentage for Spanish
4th grade scored in the top 14.2 percentage for maths and the top 27.3 percentage for Spanish
5th grade scored in the top 15.1 percentage for maths and the top 40.2 percentage for Spanish

On Wednesday, 5th September we shall be sending home individual data sheets containing a "Número de Folio del Alumno". This number can be used to access your child's individual performance on the SEP website. By following these steps.

  1. Visit the website at http://www.enlace.sep.gob.mx/
  2. Click on the icon on the right that says Resultado de mi hija (o) y Escuelas
  3. Type in your eight-digit Número de Folio del Alumno and click Consultar

* At time of writing (September 3rd), this website facility is not yet available, but SEP assure us it will soon be functional.
