Fall Newsletter

October 23, 2008

The library is open for students from 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday, with the exception of Wednesdays when we close at 2 p.m. due to early dismissal.

Students who want to visit the library during class time can get a pass from their teacher. To visit the library before school starts in the morning, students need to pick up a pass from the main office. During recess and both lunches, students can get a library pass from a basket right outside the main library doors. All are welcome, but we do need to limit numbers in order to maintain a quiet reading environment for those kids who come to read and do work during their free time.

Students in 1st -5th grade can check out books on their own as long as they know their library number. Younger students can check out up to 5 books when accompanied by a parent. All books are checked out for a period of 2 weeks. A fine of 1 peso per day will be applied to each overdue book.

Family Reading Nights

Enjoy a quiet evening of reading with your kids at our Thursday night Family Reading Nights.

Our October Family Reading Nights will take place on Thursday, October 9th and Thursday, October 30th.

October 30th will be a Spooktacular reading event. Kids can come in costumes and enjoy Hallowe'en stories read by guest readers. Families will need to sign up to attend this event. Sara, the library secretary, will have a sign up list available the week of October 20th.

Check the main calendar @ the A.S.F.M. website or the PTA calendar for a full listing of dates.

Scholastic Book Fair

The English Book Fair starts on Tuesday, November 4th and runs until Friday, November 7th. We will open at 7:45 each morning, and are open throughout the school day, including recess and lunch times, for students and parents to visit. We will close at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and at 1:45 p.m. on Friday. A reminder will be sent home in the Friday Folder the week before. Due to the rising value of the U.S. dollar vs. the peso, you may notice that the books will seem more expensive if purchased in pesos. Families who pay in U.S. dollars will not notice much change in prices. We will do our best to keep prices as low as possible during these uncertain economic times.

Resources for Parents

The library web site is a great place for parents to get information about upcoming events. You can search our library collection by going to the Search for a Book section or help your child find a book at their reading level by going to the A Just Right Book section. In addition, online databases and helpful bookmarks about many interesting topics can be found.

In the Parents Corner of the library, you can not only find the red QT folders, but books on values, parenting, and many other topics of interest for parents too.

We have several series of books on character education that support the topics of QT lessons. These are short books in both English and Spanish.

We also have books on the challenges of parenting. Some titles of interest include:

The Myth of Laziness: America's top learning expert show how kids and parent can become more productive, by Mel Levine, M.D.

If your child is having a difficult time finding materials that he/she wants to read, drop by the library with them and we'll be happy to help you by making suggestions and recommending books.

I'm looking forward to seeing you here in the library.
