The school psychologist applies established principles of learning, motivation, cognition, psycho-emotional development, as well as group dynamics, to the study of behavior of students and their educational needs. The school psychologist strives to facilitate both learning and the total human development of the student through the prevention, identification, and evaluation of educational and emotional problems.

 

Responsibilities:

  • To work with students from Nursery through Fifth Grade in order to ensure continuity of service to individuals and families as the children pass through the grades. The teachers, counselors, administration, parents, or the student may make referrals for consultation with the school psychologist.
  • To observe selected students or groups of students in their classroom setting as part of the referral process to determine whether or not they have specific behavior or emotional problems.
  • To administer the psychological and cognitive portions of the testing required for the evaluation of students referred to the Resource Team.
  • On the basis of the case study, the psychologist is expected to make recommendations on such matters as educational placement, instructional treatment, behavioral and emotional adjustment and referrals for treatment outside the school when needed.
  • To consult with parents, teachers and administration, regarding the student’s learning and emotional difficulties. The psychologist will follow up on the recommendations and provide continued support to best met the student’s needs.
