Note About AlphaSmart™ Use
The Alpha Smarts are in the teachers workroom (next to the library).
They will remain there for the rest of the year. We are trying this
year to keep them in a central location with access to a computer,
printer and an outlet to charge them. There is now a computer there
so that you can load the files directly onto that computer, or print
if you need.
(Make sure you logout of your own computer first if you want to login
in the teacher's workroom.)
The key for the cart is with the Library staff. You may sign-up
to use the Research Area of the library, the Projection Room or have
the students take the AlphaSmart™s
to their rooms for the day, period, two periods, etc. Last year we
used the patio and the picnic tables that are outside of the 2nd
grade classrooms. Be as creative as you would like.
There is an online Booking Calendar so that
you can have real time access to the schedule.
Marybell has made a user guide for storing
work used on the Alpha Smarts or how to transfer that information
at the right of this page.
Please see your technology teacher if you
have any questions. |
Instructions for Managing Files
Transferring alphasmart files into the teacher’s computer:
Basically, what you have to do is place the alphasmarts back in the cart and connect each one to their corresponding cable. Connect the long USB cable to your computer and the electric cord to the outlet. Check that the light in the box inside the cart is on (if not, turn on the switch in the box). Open the AlphaSmart™ Manager (Applications -> AlphaSmart™ -> AlphaSmart™ Manager 2 -> AlphaSmart™ Manager). A list of files will appear. Select the file number you were using with your class. Click on the GET option to transfer those files into a new folder in your computer or the SEND option to transfer files into the alphasmarts.
Transferring files into the computer labs:
Second Grade: Once you have retrieved your students' files, then you will have to place them in Barbara’s drop box (if you want students to edit and publish those documents in the lab). She will place them in the students’ computers.
• From the top menu select Go -> Connect to Server
• Type elem-teachers
• Select -> Homes
• Find Barbara Casale’s folder and open it
• Open Public
• Drag the folder with the files into the Drop Box.
• Email Barbara to request her to move those files into the computers.
Third Grade: Once you have retrieved your students' files, then you will have to place them in the students' lab hand out folders (if you want students to edit and publish those documents in the lab).
• Create a folder in your computer and place your files in it
• From the top menu select Go -> Connect to Server
• Type elem-students
• Open -> hand out
• Find your class
• Drag the folder with the files into the hand-out folder for your class
Teachers usually hand out AlphaSmart™s according to class list number, so that retrieved files are easily identified later on.
