Overview

Having internet connection in your house requires you to have an Internet Service Provider and for you to configure your computer(s) for the type of service you decide to contract.

Currently, ASFM does not provide any official internet service in
staff houses, but we have Personnel and IT Dept. staff who are willing to help you on a personal basis. We are providing this information as a rough guide only, and it is up to the individual to do as much research as possible to make sure that he/she is contracting the correct service. The information provided here is
only as a suggestion, and the school will not be liable in any way
for costs or loss of service.

The Personnel Dept. can help you with identifying which services are
available in your area, phoning for costs, and setting up the
contracts. The IT Dept. can help you decide which service would suit
your needs and setting the configuration on your computer if you are having difficulty. (Remember, this is not an official service of the school, so they will do it when they can.)

You need to decide which type of internet service you want:
1. dial-up - perfect for email and browsing internet and low cost
2. intercable - hi-speed but not good quality (but if you already
have cable tv, it may make sense)
3. hispeed (DSL, ADSL) from Telmex or Axtel (great for everything)
256k should be enough.

1. DIAL-UP
I would suggest sysop.com.mx... merely b/c I used it. they have a 175 per month thing for many many hours, or you can get 140 pesos for 20 hours spread any time over 3 months. You can even share one dial-up account. There are many other companies too. yahoo.com.mx is another I have heard people have success with.

2. INTERCABLE
Talk to Maggie. She makes the contract. They send the modem. It works when you get it, I think.

3. TELMEX or AxTel - depends on which phone company you are using in your house. a. Telmex is called Infinitum or Prodigy (same thing) You can get 128 or 256k or 512k. You have to get a DSL modem (and then you want a wireless router after that, see below). 2 options for modem - you get it, or they bring it. (ditto for wireless) You can probably do better on price by getting your own, but you need to make sure you buy correctly. If you get the Telmex modem, it is 600 to start the contract, you have to stay for 24 months contract (in that same house, it is an apt. contract, not your name, 600 pesos to cancel), so I would suggest doing the 1000pesos up front, but then you can cancel whenever you want and the modem is yours.

b. There are some places in Mty where it is impossible to get hi- speed with telmex. and with Axtel. That is where personnel can help you. Enclosed please find a web page with information about Internet with Axtel. If you have a Telmex line, you can have Internet with Axtel, but I was wrong about not using the same line, you can not make phone calls if you are using internet. If you have a Telephone line with Axtel and get internet with Axtel Banda Ancha (broadband - hi-speed), you can use the phone and the internet at the same time. Enclosed please find the page: http://www.axtel.net/

ISP Tips

  • consider how long you will be in your apartment or house when making the decision
  • decide how much you really need the internet in your house and how often you will use it
  • the type of use is a big factor in making the decision

Wireless

In order to use wireless connection, you need to have your connection already solved (2 or 3 above, although it is possible to share a Dial- up connection, you need different setup not explained here). Then you need to have a wireless card in your computer (~$100) and a wireless router (802.11g preferred, not 802.11b, ~$80 at Best Buy). Wireless is easy to break into, so make sure that you follow the intructions that come with the router to set a password, and configure your computer to have a Firewall (tech support can help with that configuration.)
