Overview
ASFM provides a variety of networked printers in many locations in the school to try to balance cost, features, and ease of use. ASFM tries to be environmentally conscious in the following ways:
- double-sided printing by default when the printer allows it (any printer with a "d" in the model number is capable of double-sided printing, e.g. HP2420dn)
- set Microsoft Word default margins to 0.75"
- set default font to 11 pt
- encourage people to conserve paper and toner by ONLY printing what you REALLY need
- encourage use of photocopiers to make multiple copies of anything (do not print more than 2 of anything)
- recycle used cartridges with HP
Default Printer
By default your computer will print to the nearest printer. If the default printer is not your nearest printer, please report the issue to the Help Desk so that the issue can be solved. If you need to print to a different printer some day, you can do so by choosing a different printer from the drop-down menu on the printer dialog box.
Printing Issues
If you send a document to print and it doesn’t print, please do not send it multiple times, please call the Help Desk. (switch to a different printer for an urgent item)
Previewing your Document / Printing PDF's
In OS X you are able to see what it will look like with Preview button. Please don't send anything to the printer until you have verified how it will print with the Preview button. You can also save your documents as PDF files (to email/post with certain formatting). In the print dialog box, click on PDF then Save as PDF… |

- Then click Print to send the job to the printer.
Instructions for Single-Sided Printing
- For single-sided printing, select File > Print... then select from the two single-sided options that appear in the Presets drop-down. (Use Auto-Feed unless you want to use special paper.)

- Then click Print to send the job to the printer.
Instructions for Printing on Special/Scrap Paper
Have you ever had to print on pre-printed or special colored paper? This is an explanation of how to do just that WITHOUT needing to make TWO TRIPS to the printer
- For single/double-sided printing on scrap or colored paper, select File > Print... then select from the two manual feed options that appear in the Presets drop-down.

- Then click Print to send the job to the printer.
- Go to printer, open the manual feed door (on front of printer)
- Place your paper in the tray, and your job should start within 20 seconds.
- Close the door when finished.
- Note: If you choose to send a job to the Manual Tray, you will effectively LOCK that printer until you go put your paper in the manual feed tray. Please send the print job, then proceed to the printer. If a printer is found stuck in this manner, IT Dept. will delete the job from the queue. This is meant to save you from running to the printer to place your paper, back to your computer to send the job, then back to the printer to pick up your printings.
