Curriculum Documents

The Mathematicsematics Department at ASFM has developed a spiral and coherent curriculum using standards and benchmarks. The main source for developing the Mathematics Department standards and benchmarks document is Content Knowledge: A Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks for K-12 Education from Mid-continental Research for Education and Learning (McREL) and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).

The Mathematics Department document is a dynamic document which is under constant review to be sure it is meeting the needs of the educational community. The purpose of a Mathematics Department standards and benchmarks document is to clarify and raise expectations, and provide a common set of expectations for the entire educational community. There is an ongoing effort to complete the document in grades ten through twelve where the Mathematics topics become more specific.

Additional courses offered by the Mathematics Department include Honors courses in grades seven through twelve, a Mathematicscounts elective in grades seven through nine and Advancednced Placement Calculus in grade twelve. For more information about AP, go to our Advancednced Placement page.

The Mathematics Department has adopted the University of Chicago School Mathematicsematics Everyday Mathematics Program in grades K-6. And, for the 2002-03 school year, grades 7-9 have adopted a textbook series also developed by UCSMP. Click here for more information about Everyday Mathematics or the University of Chicago textbook series.

Students at ASFM participate in a variety of Mathematics and Science events. They have competed annually in a Mathematics/Science relay where the team has placed first for the past 5 years. ASFM also hosts the annual Mathematicscounts chapter level competition among the bilingual schools in the area. It has placed first in each of the past 4 years. Middle school students also attend an ASOMEX event where they compete in both Mathematicscounts and a Mathematics relay. ASFM has finished among the top 3 schools in each of the past 4 years. During the past 4 years, ASFM has placed 17 students among the top 10 in the ASOMEX event.

This challenge is continued in high school where students take on the AP exam. ASFM had 15 student take the AP Calculus exam and all 15 scored a perfect 5 out of 5 on the exam.
