Laptop Cart Use |
The laptop cart, kept in the 5th grade faculty room, contains 13 wireless laptops with access to the Internet. The cart will remain locked with a combination padlock. Only 4th and 5th grade teachers will have access to the combination and the laptops.
Booking Procedure
Enter the ASFM’s website (http://www.asfm.edu.mx). Click on Staff. Select Bookings/Reservations. Choose Online Booking Calendars. Select ELEM_Laptop_Cart. Find desired date in the calendar and check for blank boxes to find available periods. Consider the time it takes to collect and return laptops. Click on Marybell Rodriguez and an email message will appear. Enter the date, starting time, ending time, and the activity that will be performed or the software that will be used. Send the email and verify the periods that were booked in the calendar once a reply from Marybell has been received.
Collecting Laptops from the Cart
Disconnect the 2 power plugs from the wall outlet. Take the cart out of the 5th grade faculty room and roll it to the closest hall area. 4th grade teachers will take it as close to the stairs as possible. Open the padlock with the combination. IMPORTANT: THE TEACHERS MAY NOT GIVE OUT THE COMBINATION TO THE STUDENTS. Ask students to carefully remove the laptops and take them to the classroom. Please lock the padlock once again, even though the laptops have already been taken out.
IMPORTANT: TEACHERS SHOULD KEEP A RECORD OF THE NAMES OF THE STUDENTS USING EACH LAPTOP.
Damage or Malfunction
Responsibility for these laptops will be similar to the sign-out equipment policy found on the school’s IT web site. In brief, the user is responsible for any negligent action, so care must be always stressed with the students. They have small desks which if the laptop is on the desk with other stuff, the laptop will be prone to being pushed off of the desk. An easy rule here would be to mention to the students that nothing else should be on a desk with the laptop. Damage or malfunction must be reported as soon as possible to the Help Desk so that appropriate action can be taken.
The applications that are available are the same as in the computer labs. They are:
| Appleworks | iPhoto | Audio Recorder |
| Safari | iMovie | Kidspiration |
| Google Earth | iWeb | Media Blender |
| Garageband | iTunes | Timeliner |
Logging in
Turn laptops on. Wait 10 seconds after the initial message appears on the screen to log in. Students will use the same user name and password as in the computer lab.
Saving Files
Files will be saved directly into the student’s documents folder in the student server. The files can later be used in another laptop, the computer lab, and the library.
Teacher Access to Student Files
The hand-in and hand-out folders will be available on the laptop’s desktop so that teachers are able to access student files and can also hand out files to the students.
End of Session Procedure
Once the work session is over, students will logout and shut the laptops down. Students will have to show the teacher that it has been turned off by showing that the little white light is not glowing. Students must wait until the screen is black before closing the laptop as it shuts down. The teacher will open the padlock using the combination, and students will put them away. The power plug needs to be connected to each laptop (on the right hand side). The padlock is then locked and the cart is rolled back again into the 5th grade faculty room and connected to the electricity. CAUTION: THE 2 POWER PLUGS IN THE BACK OF THE CART NEED TO BE CONNECTED TO THE WALL OUTLET TO ENSURE ALL LAPTOPS WILL BE CHARGED FOR THE NEXT CLASS THAT WILL USE THEM.
Saving in the Hand-in Folder (If Necessary)
From the top menu, select Go and choose Connect to Server. Enter elem-students and click on connect. Enter student’s user name and password as in computer lab. Select Student Files from the list and click on Open. Open the Hand-in folder and find the class. Drop the file inside the class folder.
The teacher will need to move the file to the hand-out folder so that the student is able to continue using it in a laptop, computer lab, or library.
Retrieving a File from the Hand-out Folder
From the top menu, select Go and choose Connect to Server. Enter elem-students and click on Connect. Enter student’s user name and password as in computer lab. Select Student Files and click on Open. Open the Hand-out folder and find the class. Drag the file into the documents folder.
