Password & Screensaver

Overview

How to set up a "strong" password and configure the screensaver to ask for it each time you leave your computer unattended.

System Preferences

This allows you to customize your accounts. Such as display font, size, color, sounds, background, keyboard, mouse, etc.
(For Windows users, this is the same as Control Panel.)
You may change any of the following items here in the future.

  • Desktop—picture or OSX default (not auto change)
  • Screen saver—security, screen saver to choose which
  • Exposé—hot corners, keys
  • Many others

Why Do I Need to Have a Secure Account?

Computer security starts with restricting physical access to your computer. You may not think that you have any “top secret” documents, but it is imperative that you have your account protected by a screen saver and STRONG and SECRET password because of the things that can be accessed using your login account from any machine in the school such as teacher site, grades, comments, EOM voting, confidential records, access to information systems, etc.

How Do I Pick a Strong Password?

Do not write your password on a Post-It near your computer. Choose something that uses letters, numbers, and special characters for better security. (e.g.: pa55word, *struck, 123my#, myBIGpWd) One way to create a good but memorable password is to take, say, a favorite song lyric or movie phrase (as an example, "I like to have a nice strong password."), and use the first letter in each word to create your password (in our example, that would be "ilthansp").
