  What it is...

Did you know that you could enhance your lessons with 40,000 video clips—right now?

The American School Foundation of Monterrey provides you with unitedstreaming™—a web-based digital video delivery system. Videos are correlated to all US and Canada state standards.

unitedstreaming’s content is from Discovery Education, Discovery Channel School, The Shoah Foundation, Standard Deviants, Weston Woods, Sunburst Technology, ASCD and more.

  Other Features

Search video library by: keyword, subject, grade
level, state standards, all available titles, and advanced options.

Choose from a full video title or short concept clips to stream and/or download for classroom instruction or for use in multimedia presentations.

Blackline masters and teacher's guides are available for most videos.

Access a calendar of historical events directly linked to video clips.

Create your own ‘Playlists’ to bookmark video clips for quick and easy use in lesson planning or in the classroom.

Here’s How to Begin…

  • For the first time, go to unitedstreaming.com and use the passcode (****-****) from your Librarian to get access to create your own account (this makes you a registered teacher to this school). Keep your new account information somewhere safe and available.
  • Each subsequent login that you wish to use unitedstreaming, enter your newly created username and password, rather than entering the passcode again.
  • When entering the site for the first time, setup your preferences in the top of the main page.
  • You can now select your prefered video application. Quicktime is easely handled by Macs but Windows Media has the closed captioning option and is more compatible with PCs. Be sure to select the Stand Alone Application option so you can have more flexibility in using the video, as inserting it in a Power Point presentation.
  Previewing/Getting Ready
  • Search for video title(s) that you wish to view. The results of your search will be displayed on a list.
  • Click on the blue, underlined title of the video you wish to view. You can choose to download the full video or one or several segments.
  • CTRL-click the download icon to save the full video or a segment in your favorite location.
  • When video is downloaded, you can then watch it many times instead of downloading it each time.
  • If you need further instruction click on ‘HELP’ at the top of the unitedstreaming webpage.
  Using in Class

Don't do live stream when trying to show. Preview the day(s) before and save file on Desktop. When ready to show your class, book a projector according to the LCD Projector policy. Open up the clip (which you previously viewed and saved in your Desktop folder) on the computer from which you're projecting, make the Quicktime window larger, and project. Pause/play as necessary with space bar.

In Quicktime Player, you can make the window larger by choosing Movie>>Double Size from the menu at the top or dragging the bottom right corner of the Quicktime screen.

  Do's/Don't's
  • Best for in class viewing with LCD projector. Please do NOT get each student in A104 or library individually viewing the movies. Do NOT book A104 to project a video from one computer unless part of some other activity.
  • Don't give out login to students. (Students downloading or streaming videos will quickly use up extraordinary amounts of bandwidth, incurring unnecessary costs and lead to slowdowns in our network.)
  • Video, whether streamed or downloaded, still has to travel through the connection to your computer. Therefore, since video is a "heavy" medium, it causes traffic on the internet link. Use it wisely. Click here for more information.
  • Every video, after it is on your "computer", is actually on an account server, so it is using storage space, and every time you view the video, network traffic is created. Use it wisely.
  Archiving

In the future, to avoid downloading a second time and to avoid you saving videos in your account, it could help if you save the videos on CD. You can either burn them yourself, or the Librarian can catalog the videos for future purposes if you go to the Library and burn a CD there. The Librarian will give you a CD for this purpose.

(please note: Archived versions of the videos contained on unitedstreaming are only legal for employees of ASFM while we have a valid subscription to the service. Any other unauthorized use is prohibited.)
