Hi,
I'm Jen Lawlis de Villarreal. I am Canadian and I have been here in Monterrey
for nine years now. I came here in 1995 to teach at another school and
moved over to ASFM six years ago. Since living here, I have gotten married,
travelled a lot and took a year off to have my beautiful baby girl. I
returned to ASFM and now I teach grade 3 and it has been wonderful.
The social aspects open to new teachers here are great. There are lots
of opportunities. There are incredible restaurants all over the city.
If you feel like a little shopping head to Plaza Fiesta San Agustin. Clothes,
hair care, picking up the latest tunes, it's all there. JC Penney's, Sears,
a teacher's store, and an incredible movie theater are ready to serve
you. Hair care? JC Penney's offers every service with helpful, English-speaking
personnel.
If you are into dancing or listening to live music, Monterrey has its
share of clubs: Bar Rio, La Fonda, Vat Kru, Escena... lots of choice for
a night out on the town! Travel opportunities? Cultural getaways like
Zacatecas, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, San Miguel and Oaxaca scream history.
Cancun, Mazatlan and Ixtapa are great for those sun-lovers.
Even though you are moving south, don't expect it to be hot all the time.
Be sure to bring a number of warm sweaters, turtlenecks, selection of
fall/winter pants, even a warm coat, gloves, and a scarf. If you can fit
it... bring a duvet for your bed. It really does get damp and cold here.
I have been married for four and half years now to a wonderful guy. He
is Mexican and we met my second year here. I'm telling you this so you
can be prepared. You may be expecting to be here for two years, but it
may be for much longer.
Bienvenido!
