Becky Heinmiller
Grade 5 teacher
2003-present

December, 2003

Hi. My name is Becky Heinmiller and this is my first year here at ASFM, teaching grade five. After teaching in Ontario, Canada for a few years, I decided to give international teaching a try and I am so glad I took the plunge. Teaching and living here has been a fantastic experience in so many ways.
Right from the moment I was hired last winter I have been amazed at the amount of support and assistance provided by the staff, administration and community at ASFM. From emails offering advice and assistance on getting prepared to move here, to being met at the border for a car caravan down to Monterrey, I have found that there is always someone ready and willing to make the transition to Mexico as smooth as possible. When you arrive in Monterrey, you will be taken to your apartment, which will be very comfortably furnished, and probably even supplied with some groceries, courtesy of the PTA moms!
I have found teaching at ASFM to be both challenging and very rewarding. Expectations are high, but there is a tremendous amount of support and opportunities for inservices. Working at such a large school with so many other great teachers provides lots of opportunities for learning and collaboration. I have found the administration and other staff here to be extremely friendly and helpful. This is a very positive working environment where teachers are enthusiastic and work hard.
On a personal level, I am really enjoying living in Monterrey. The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains, and the suburb where most teachers live is very pleasant, with almost all the comforts of home. There are many opportunities here to get involved in all kinds of activities, from sports, rock climbing and hiking to visiting restaurants and museums around town. There is always something going on! There are also opportunities to travel and see other parts of Mexico. Many wonderful places are within driving distance or a short flight away.
Making the decision to move overseas is a big one, but I am very happy to be teaching at ASFM.

Good luck, and maybe we’ll see you down here next August!
