January 2008. If you are reading this letter that means you are considering working at ASFM and I feel that I could give you an honest overview of what to expect here. The city of Monterrey is a busy metropolis, mostly made up of concrete buildings and busy roads, with a lot to do in regards to nightlife, museums and a few beautiful natural areas for hiking and biking. There are many museums and also many venues to check out live music and DJ’s. There are multiple opportunities to become active here in Monterrey. Upon my arrival last year I was playing soccer, basketball, ultimate, and mountain biking all in the same week. When I told a good friend this he replied, “Welcome to ASFM sports camp.” Although I do enjoy Monterrey, it isn’t my favorite city in Mexico. If you work here you will have many opportunities to travel one of the most beautiful and diverse countries I have ever been to. The beaches on the Baja peninsula, Yucatan peninsula and the southern Oaxaca coast are world famous for their sand and surf. Also colonial cities, like Zacatecas, offer a cool look into a more “traditional” less tourist driven Mexico. The school itself is really the best I’ve ever worked at. The administration team is approachable, professional, and really cares about your ideas. They give you a sense of empowerment by listening to what you say and helping your ideas come to fruition. This is much different than my past experiences in teaching, in which principals seemed to be handcuffed in regards to making changes in the curriculum or the classroom. Likewise, the encouragement from and opportunities provided by the school for professional development are extremely useful and always available. It is also worth mentioning the friendliness of the Mexican people and their willingness to help out regardless of the situation. There is a strong sense of community here in Monterrey and in all of Mexico. I hope what I’ve said has been helpful. Please feel free to email any questions and I’ll answer them as honest as possible. Cheers, |
