Katherine Simmons
Grade 6 Science/English
2006-present

January 2008.

Welcome! My name is Katherine Simmons. I teach grade 6 Science and English at the American School Foundation of Monterrey. This is my fifth year teaching and my second overseas position (I spent my first 3 years as a teacher working in St. Maarten). I have really enjoyed working at ASFM. Right from the start the staff and administration did everything possible to make you feel welcome. When you arrive at your house you will find food and a welcome package from the PTA. The school feeds you lunches for your first few days while you attend orientation sessions. These sessions give you valuable information about living in Monterrey and working at ASFM. There are social gatherings that help facilitate the formation of new friendships, as well as guided tours and local activities that help you get acquainted with the city. I could not have asked for an easier transition to a foreign country. ASFM truly goes above and beyond to help you to get settled in.

If I had to choose the best experience I have had in Monterrey, it would be the professional development/personal growth that I have gone through while working at ASFM. The administration is second to none in their support and guidance of all staff members. They are very knowledgeable and have many resources that can support your learning in any area of education. They set up programs for all staff members to participate in that keep you up to date with changes in education as well as with new policies that help improve student learning. I feel as though my experiences have helped to change me into a more confident and well-rounded teacher. The things that I have learned at ASFM are invaluable to my personal growth and development as an educator.

Finally I would have to say the most important thing about working at ASFM is the staff morale. The teachers and administration all care. They care about each other as well as their students. You feel as though you are part of a large international family. It is a great feeling to know that if you have any problems or concerns while living so far away from home, there are 150 other people that are there to help and support you. The human resource department at the school is sensational. They do anything and everything to make sure you have what you need, when you need it. It certainly is a worry free lifestyle in Monterrey.

Whether you are moving to Monterrey for your first job or tenth, your experience at ASFM will definitely be a happy and memorable one!

With warmest regards,

Katherine Simmons
