Jen Roberts
Grade 7 Socials/Grade 8 English
2005-present

January 2008.

Two years ago, I was browsing through international school websites, trying to make the monumental decision as to where to spend the next couple years of my life. Purely by chance I stumbled upon the page you are now reading, never believing I’d choose to move to Mexico. It was as I read what staff had to say about ASFM that I realized I’d found my match. The dynamic teaching and an active physical and social life, combined with incredible students in an environment where everyone is set up to succeed, teachers included, is the reason I’ve decided to stay for a third year. I realize that one day I’ll need to make the decision whether to stay or go, but right now I’m living in Mexico, challenging myself daily with a different culture and a school that motivates me to strive to be the best I can professionally; and I’m doing it all with an incredible support network of friends and colleagues. So while you’re making what could be a very difficult decision, take the time to check out what people say about ASFM to ensure you’ll find the right match for you.

Jen’s Top 10 13 Reasons to Stay at ASFM:

  • The climate – I think we just had the first day of spring on the 29th of January
  • They’re helping to pay for my master’s, and bringing the instructors from the US to us.
  • I teach what I’m certified to teach (and no longer need to be an expert in art, drama, music, math, science, and PE)
  • Did I mention I only teach 1 grade at a time and they’re all working at relatively the same level?
  • The students are so polite and eager to learn
  • Right now my biggest class size is 24, and the rest are 21. Imagine the possibilities.
  • I have a rooftop patio that faces the Huasteca canyon
  • The bike and running trails through the canyon
  • Supportive parents and administration
  • Numerous holidays and chances to travel (you can get very cheap flights within Mexico)
  • Really interesting teachers who enjoy teaching and have traveled all around the world
  • Great professional development conference opportunities
  • Mexican language and culture
