Hola!
My name is Mike Guzowski. I teach grade 7 & 8 science at the American
School Foundation of Monterrey. This is my fifth year teaching and
my second overseas position (I spent my first 2 years as a teacher
working in Colombia). I am very happy here.
Monterrey is a great place to be if you like to travel. It’s a hop, skip,
and jump away from great travel destinations within Mexico (think Cancun, Guadalajara,
Oaxaca, Baja California, … the list goes on) and in the southern United
States, Central America, and the Caribbean.
At school, my experiences have been a whirlwind combination of busy, fulfilling,
and fun. There are many things about my time here that have made it so incredibly
positive. To begin with, my opinion is not only valued, but it is actively
solicited. The school is great and is always striving to become better. To
that end, the administration makes full use of the expertise that its teachers
bring from their experiences in Canada, the States, and abroad.
They are always open to teacher input regarding school policies. Numerous changes
and improvements that have been suggested by teachers this year have already
been implemented.
In addition, there are many opportunities for professional development. The
high caliber teachers we have at ASFM always have great teaching ideas and
suggestions. The school also provides an opportunity for teachers to enroll
in a M.Ed. program designed specifically for teachers in international settings.
Furthermore, teachers are instructed in the use of webpage software and encouraged
to increase their computer literacy in general.
Finally, what most impresses me about the school is that high expectations
exist for both students and staff - and we rise to the occasion! I work with
a group of highly dedicated and energetic teachers. Their professionalism is
a source of inspiration and I appreciate their constant support. The students
are very polite and sincere. I get along with them extremely well and I can
get them to produce some fine work. In short, I enjoy going to work everyday.
