Parent Teacher Conferences
All parents are strongly encouraged to plan to come to the school from 12 Noon to 2:00 PM next week, Thursday October 2nd to receive Progress Report #1 AND to meet for 5 to 10 minutes with EACH teacher for all children attending La Huasteca. These gymnasium meetings are an excellent opportunity to meet your child’s teachers. These are popular conferences, but please plan to be here at 12:00 as we do not extend them past 2:00. Please remember, if a meeting of more than 10 minutes is required, you can make an appointment for a meeting at a later date. We look forward to seeing you! Please enhance the communication between the school and home by attending this event.
For parents who cannot make it to our gymnasium conferences, students will be given their progress reports the following day at lunch (no parent note required).

Community Service Fair
This Thursday we have a special program for our High School students. We will hear about the wonderful things our students are doing in our community with organizations that need our help, and students will learn information so that they can sign up for their community service programs this year. Grade 8 students will be working with the Character Education Committee to visit community organizations such as Nuevo Amanecer. Grade 12 students will be visiting UdeM.

National Honor Society events August/September
Supply Drive
Without a doubt, the "Supply Drive" was extremely rewarding. We collected 57 boxes of used school supplies which we donated to different organizations/schools such as: Lic. Miguel Aleman (our sister school), Soñar Despierto, Lazos, Crecer Libre, Madres de la Misericordia Divina, and Enlazando Tradiciones. Our used school supplies even ended up being recieved by kids in la Sierra Huichole. Most importantly, we are amazed at the dedication and effort of several NHS members, who didn't mind spending the last days of summer tearing the used paper out of notebooks. In general more than 20 work hours where devoted to this project.
Introduction to New Students
The new student orientation was organized by Mr. McDonald. NHS worked in collaboration with Student Council to guide the new students around school a couple of days before school started. Since then, NHS members have helped new students adapt to the environment and have offered help/advice.
DreamScape
NHS has set out to help our community. For DreamScape, NHS members volunteered as ushers to improve the quality of the event. In addition, NHS members provided small details, such as labeling the chairs for reserved seating and helping at the box office (briefly). DreamScape was also a fundraiser for NHS projects, we sold food and drinks during the intermission. In general if was a win-win situation for both parties.

Community Service News
As we returned from vacation, ASFM students donated 27 boxes of school materials such as binders, page protectors, sheets and color to mision Topo Chico Kids. Another similar package will be donated to Fundación Crecer Libre.
Four overhead projectors and three bags of sports materials were donated to La República public school and another similar package will be given to Eduardo Caballero public school.
Also, Mrs. Jeanette Rauize de Santos donated 10 boxes of apples to Mision Topoc chico!
The kids at these communities are very thankful and more than grateful with the ASFM community. Thank you students and thank you Community Service Learning.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Advisory Time
Our Middle School Advisory Program during conference period guides the academic, social and emotional learning of adolescents as they navigate through this unique stage in their lives. Education is a dynamic process that involves both academic and “real life” experiences, our Advisory Program is in place to assist our middle school students with the “adolescent balancing act”. Modern educational research indicates that adolescence is a stage of development when an individual works through many struggles related to identity, self-knowledge, and social challenges. It is proven that these challenges are significantly easier to face, when students feel supported by a teacher advisor. Advisory programs provide this adult guidance that is necessary during this crucial developmental time.
This week we have:
6th-- MUN Intro
7th-- SLC Goal Setting
8th--Creativity Invention Convention Presentations

HIGH SCHOOL

Open Campus valid only with 08-09 ID
Bach/10-12 students should be aware that as of today, September 29th, Security will ask them to show their ASFM 08-09 ID in order to have the Open Campus privilege.
If they haven't picked your ID, they should come by the little window next to the clinic door to get it, during HS Break, Lunch or before/after school ONLY.
If you forget your ID at home and would like to leave campus, it will not be possible. If it is an emergency, you will need to contact an Administrator.

Conference Period
As you well know, ASFM is promoting much more than academic excellence. The whole child is focused on and values and character education are part of our program. We have included in our schedule each Wednesday a conference period during which smaller groups of students gather with a teacher to discuss issues, events and other items that are of importance to our student body. This is an excellent way for teachers to check in on students and get to know them better. Also it provides an opportunity for students to get to know their peers in a non-academic setting.
This week we have:
9th--College Fair
10th--College Fair
11th--College Fair
12th--College Fair
