Spanish
Welcome to the Elementary Spanish Department!
At ASFM, students take one period of instruction in Spanish everyday. Spanish teachers receive students in their classroom at the assigned time, while regular classroom teachers plan or attend meetings. Spanish is the first language for most students. However, students who come from abroad receive support from the Special Spanish teacher.
Our goal at ASFM is to enable our students to become proficient in both English and Spanish. As Spanish teachers, we have a great challenge before us; the curriculum standards are comprehensive and we expect students to become excellent readers and writers in our language. Our benchmarks, based on the Secretaría de Educación Pública Program (in Mexico), are broken down into benchmarks and teaching points; and we use the architecture of the minilesson to do our direct teaching. We integrate Balanced Literacy components in the Spanish program: reading strategies are modeled in read alouds, and students reinforce those strategies in shared reading sessions. Independent reading is promoted at all levels, and teachers use modeled and interactive writing as often as our schedule allows it.
Our Social Studies program is designed to strengthen our Mexican roots, and our themes include Mexican geography, history, festivities and traditions.
When you come to Monterrey, we invite you to come and visit the Spanish Department. You will meet a group of Spanish teachers who speak English and like to socialize!
Please contact me if you have further questions. I look forward to having you here next year!
Sincerely,
The Spanish Team
