  • December 6th: Registration opens! Please discuss these with your children before registering.
  • December 16th: Registration closes at 9:00 a.m. for families.
    • Signing up is not a guarantee that the class will run.
    • We require a minimum of four (4) students to run a class.
  • December 18th: Parent confirmations sent; Payment instructions will be sent within this message.
  • Week of January 13th: Classes begin this week depending on the day of the class
  • January 20th: Last day for parents to cancel attendance for a class before being charged

Things to Know:

  1. Availability:  Classes are on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis.  We do have a minimum and maximum capacity for each class.  The minimum is four and the maximum will depend on the individual class.  
  2. Conflicts:  
    • If your child participates on an athletics team, he or she can only attend one of these activities.  
    • If your child takes after-school ballet, you can only select the classes when your child does NOT attend ballet classes. For instance, if you child takes ballet on Monday and Wednesday, she/he cannot select classes on these days of the week.
  3. Multiple Classes:  If your child does not participate on an athletics team or in the ballet, you are open to apply for as many different classes. Please be mindful of the days of the week for each class and ending times.
  4. Transportation:  This will be the responsibility of parents.  
    • Buses:  If a child does need to use bus service, it will be available in alignment with all other after-school activities. Arrangements to be included in the bus schedule will be the responsibility of each individual family.
    • Carpools:  Our carpool pickup system will be in place as usual for after-school activities. Parents are asked to make sure that they have the carpool sign available when entering school grounds.
      • Students in 1-hour long classes will be picked up at the main entrance at the front of the Elementary School.
      • Students in 1-hour and 40 minute classes will be picked up in coordination with all other after-school activities in the underground elementary parking lot.
  5. Payments:  If accepted into the class, instructions will be sent with the confirmation email message.  Your account will be billed.

Little Einsteins K-5

About the Program:
Creativity is intelligence having fun; said Albert Einstein. In this class, kids will have the opportunity to become scientists by discovering, experimenting, exploring and learning. Fun, interesting and interactive experiments will awaken students curiosity, creativity and their interest in science.

About the Teachers:
Georgina Berlanga is the coordinator for the Elementary School science lab. Georgina Garza is a Preschool Teacher at ASFM. This mother/daughter team have a passion for working with children and in science.

Community Service - Grades 3, 4 & 5

About the Program:
As a teacher who values the importance of giving to others, I would like to give our students the opportunity to become aware of the needs in our community, inspire them to be part of the solution by putting their caring hearts into action, give them the skills to become positive role models and in the long run, empower them to become proactive leaders. Every other week, we will visit our sister school in San Pedro and share special activities planned by students the week prior to the visit.

About the Teacher:
Martha Fiehn has been a teacher for 15 years. She is currently working in Grade 5. She has taught Kindergarten, Spanish and was a Grade 4 homeroom teacher for seven years. She loves helping others and creating a ripple effect with acts of kindness in order for us to become better people that will contribute great things to our school and community.

Graffiti Art Class - Grades 1 - 5

About the Program:
This course is designed and planned for kids who would like to have fun learning new skills and techniques, working independently and collectively. Self-confidence will flourish at the heart of graffiti, by using stencils and spray painting, thus making street art or developing imaginative images. A hands-on experience building art, layer by layer. Tips on how to use spray cans, different types of caps, and what to do when you mess up will be provided throughout the designed activities. This graffiti class offers a fresh, exciting opportunity to reach creative potential, based on a series of World-Wide modern-day Graffiti Artists, and other urban art techniques. It is inspirational, wonderfully challenging, and rewarding.

About the Teacher:
The Graffiti Art class is taught by Sandra Fernandez, a former ASFM student; who holds a master in education and over 19 years of experience in Arts, she is a certified Apple Teacher, Google Teacher, Painter and Muralist, as well as an Art Academy-Gallery owner.
Additionally from being an artist, Ms. Fernández is an educator which allows her to incorporate an artistic approach while teaching, providing high quality guidance to nurture and stimulate the creative spirit, actively encouraging to find and develop an artistic voice and foster new expertise.

LEGO RoboKids Club Grades 1 & 2

About the Program:
Tomorrow’s innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork. The LEGO RoboKids Club will design, build, and program a robot using LEGO WeDo 2.0 ® technology, then research real-world problem and be challenged to develop a creative solution. It all adds up to tons of fun while students learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination.

This class will encourage students to challenge their creative minds through building and creating models with Play-Doh. Through the hands-on modeling, students will practice and improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Happy Kids: Mindfulness & Yoga K-2

About the Program:
This course is made up of enjoyable activities that teach students how to self-regulate behavior, improve awareness of emotions/feelings and surroundings, as well as improvement of self esteem and conscience strategies to solve dilemas in their everyday problems. The purpose of the course is for students to live a balanced, healthy and anxiety free life. Students will practice breathing exercises, activities that promote gratitude and play games with yoga that promote awareness of their own and other's emotions/feelings.

About the Teacher:
Ms. Tina Villarreal has been teaching students at ASFM for 6 years, she is a former ASFM student and has a degree in Education from the University of Monterrey (UDEM), and a Masters from Buffalo State University. She has been engaged in mindfulness courses for 5 years, she has been teaching mindfulness and yoga to kids for three years. She believes it is important to teach students mindfulness since it improves attention, impulse/control, self knowledge, social skills and self esteem.

Acrobatics K - 3

About the Program:
Movement and dance! In this class we focus on flexibility, strength, coordination and balance to perform entry level acrobatic skills. We will begin with basic stunts such as forward rolls, cartwheels, hand stands and beginner balances all while incorporating dance and movement.    
 
About the Teacher:
Sabrina Stream is an educational assistant at ASFM and enjoys bringing movement into the lives of children. She taught recreational gymnastics and tumbling for over 12 years. Since 2016, she has coached students in several gyms in the US before moving to Mexico.

Tool's Master Junior

About the Program:
During the classes, the student will know the most common tools for manual/repair work.
They will be trained to know how to use them and their safety measures.
The student will be able to be creative designing or improving the prototype that will be shown as an example.
The main objective is that student masters the tools and apply such knowledge at home or for schools projects if necessary. 
Open for future engineers, architects, designers or anyone who wants it!

About the Teacher:
Aldo Eduardo Espinoza Chavez is an electronics technician and mechatronics engineer. He has 15+ years of experience in areas of industrial maintenance and facilities such as Ginequito Hospital, Sitel Mexico, and the US Consulate General in Monterrey. Aldo has a passion for creating and fixing things within any type of maintenance work and continuous improvement.

Chess Club K - 1

About the Program:
The CHESS ACADEMY is based on the more entertaining and efficient teaching method: ""Learning through play.” We use technology to complement the Chess class. For example, we use computer software of the German company ChessBase, which is a world leader in educational software to learn chess. We teach our students from the basics: the pieces movement, the analysis of the positions, mental arithmetic, decision-making, etc... It is also important to compare their skills with other children through participation in state tournaments, regional, national and international. Also, kids will participate in tournaments like the Interscholastic League: WARRIORS OF THE BOARD by CHESS ACADEMY.

About the Teacher:
Victor Emmanuel Aguilar Monsivais has a degree in Business Administration, specializing in Marketing and Master in Information Technology at the UANL. Currently, Mr. Aguilar is the director and founder of Chess Academy. As a Chess Teacher, he has more than 20 years of experience working with children. His students have won more than 1,500 medals and he has trained more than 10 state and national champions. As a Chess player, he holds the title of "national master" and has been a 5-time state champion.

Hands-On Cooking

About the Program:
Let's get our kids in the kitchen! This class is designed to teach students how to make easy and healthy food choices as well as participate in sensory activities. We will learn and practice some basic math concepts and build language skills. Students are notoriously picky eaters and bringing them into the kitchen to cook can help them understand new tastes. This class will focus on food preparation, kitchen safety and nutrition. Students learn by exploring with their senses and the kitchen is a great place to do that.    

About the Teacher:
Ms. Brenda Cantu has been at ASFM for seven years and she is currently a Kindergarten Educational Assistant. She really enjoys how students show a lot of interest in cooking and learning new things. She is very excited to offer this cooking course again and can't wait to see how students enjoy this hands-on class while learning. Brenda enjoys working with kids after-school and establishing positive relationships through teamwork through this culinary adventure.
